Social Rides, Challenges, and the Last Disco—It’s Going to be a ‘Wheely’ Good Bike Month

Several cyclists on the road stop and pose for a selfie.

IT’S BIKE MONTH, Y’ALL! And you know what that means—we expect every single trip you take to be by bike, or we will officially unfriend and disown you.

Nah, we’re kidding. This month is all about celebrating bikes, highlighting the cycling community, and educating everyone about all the fun ways to travel around on two wheels. Would we love for you to switch out a car trip or two for a bike trip? Heck yeah. In fact, that’s why we’re hosting challenges (with sweet prizes included) throughout the month to encourage you to bike around a bit.

Each week starting May 8, we’ll challenge you to ride your bike to different spots (a coffee shop, an ice cream parlor, work, art/murals). All you have to do to complete the challenge is ride your bike to a spot, post a picture of it on social media, tag us, and you’re entered to win a variety of prizes! Stay tuned to our Facebook|Instagram channels for all the details and to participate.

ROANOKE OUTSIDE FEATURED EVENTS

MAY 8-14: BIKE TO COFFEE CHALLENGE

MAY 15-21 BIKE TO WORK CHALLENGE

MAY 19: BIKE TO WORK DAY

MAY 22-28: BIKE TO ICE CREAM CHALLENGE

MAY 24: BREWERY BY BIKE TOUR

MAY 29: BIKE TO ART CHALLENGE

In addition to our weekly challenges, we’re hosting a Brewery by Bike Tour with Get2KnowNoke on May 24. We’ll hang out, ride around to breweries, and learn a thing or two about biking around Roanoke. We hope you’ll join us!

And of course, the community is showing up in a big way this month with a literal TON (don’t try to do that math conversion; just trust us) of events this May. Franklin County has weekly mountain bike rides, Covington is hosting a youth biking day, Ride Solutions is hosting a Fancy Dress Brigade, and more. One event we think you should check out in particular is the Mill Mountain Disco Race. After 10 groovy years, they’re packing up their polyester and sunsetting this event. We hope you’ll either ride or volunteer in one (or all) of these races and send it off in a blaze of glory! In addition to that, we’ve compiled a comprehensive list of other events from all over the entire region (some are weekly events, some are one-offs), and we want to connect you with all the biking groups in the region (in case you catch the cycling bug). See something that we need to add? Let us know!

Take a look, plan your month, and get ready to live life on two wheels this May!
