Summer Werk: Get Paid to Keep the Outdoors Awesome

Summer work, or werk as we like to call it, is perfect for students, teachers, retirees… anyone who has their summers free and is looking to make a little extra cash! Our outdoor recreation ecosystem relies on awesome people providing their skills, time, and expertise, especially during the summer months! This is our call-to-action to be one of those cool people who contributes to our robust outdoor culture by leading an outdoor camp, keeping scores at games, or providing maintenance to our collective outdoor spaces.

Camp Bethel Summer Camp

What are they looking for: Resident Summer Camp Counselors, age 18+; Hourly Kitchen Crew, age 16+

Werk Perks: Housing and meals provided. Camp Counselors: $370+ per week; Hourly Kitchen Crew, $425-$510 per week.

Date of Employment: Weekly, May 29 through July 23 or 31. $370-$510 per week; additional weeks available. Time off available.

Roanoke Young Women’s Conservation Crew

What are they looking for: hiring for a young women’s conservation crew in Roanoke this summer. We’re trying to create a space in which young women feel empowered to learn in a male-dominated industry, and I was wondering if you would be able to share information about this position with your network. We’re hiring young women aged 16-18 for a four-week season

Werk perks: $15/per hour, up to 40 hours a week.

Dates of Employment: June 12 to July 7 OR July 10 to August 4

The Peaks Retreat

The Peaks Retreat and Adventure Center

What are they looking for: Peaks Adventure Programs Staff to cover different job responsibilities, serving as ropes course facilitators, canoe and archery instructors, lifeguards, as well as event staff, in response to programming needs.

The Peaks Adventure Program Staff is responsible for facilitating and teaching activities and guiding participants in their personal growth through adventure, whether on our low ropes course, climbing wall, or zipline.

Werk Perks: Lodging is provided when scheduled to work when overnight groups are on our campus, 20+ hours per week, $18-$22 per hour.

Dates of employment: This is a part-time, seasonal position during March-October.

Wilderness Adventure at Eagle Landing

What are they looking for: Located 40 minutes outside Roanoke, Wilderness Adventure is a year-round adventure center and is currently hiring Trip Leaders for its summer adventure camp season. This is your chance to lead backpacking based trips (that include paddling, biking, climbing, and caving) for youth ages 9-17. Must be 18 years old.

Werk Perks: All training and room/board provided.

Dates of Employment: Summer season runs May 24-August 12. There is flexibility on your end date. There is also opportunity to extend employment into the fall and/or year round.

Werk Perks: $14.50 per hour
