Cool Off with the Lake Moomaw Open Water Swim

There’s nothing like a cool dip in the water to beat the heat of summer.

The Lake Moomaw One Mile Open Water Swim takes place in the beautiful mountain landscape and breathtaking scenery of the Alleghany Highlands on Saturday, August 4.

The swim starts at Cole’s Point on the southern portion of the lake and heads toward Gathright Dam and back. The course runs along the shore to the south, approximately 50 yards out and continues east and north around buoys that will be clearly visible. The turn-around point is inside the no wake zone in the inlet.

The race starts at 9 a.m. and is open to all swimmers ages 18 and up. Awards go to the top three men and women finishers in each age group. The awards ceremony will take place on the beach following the race.

The Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce and Tourism co-hosts the event with Dave Holland, United States Masters Swimming Long Distance Chair.

Lake Moomaw is among the most popular developed recreation areas in the George Washington National Forest and provides an endless array of activities including boating, fishing, hiking, biking, and camping.
