Mono Means One is the brainchild of bassist and composer John Ferrara, best known for his solo work and as a member of the acclaimed world fusion band “Consider the Source.” Rather than learning other instruments, Ferrara instead made a conscious decision to replicate their sounds and function on the bass. In this project, he sees this aspect of his ethos through to a whole new level. Ferrara broadens his unorthodox approach to the instrument by creating and recording ethereal, emotionally nuanced, and epic compositions. All recorded with the bass, though sounding like anything but. Ferrara uses tapping, harmonics, chords, volume swells, slide bass, E-bow, and a multitude of different effect pedals, tricking the listeners into thinking they are hearing guitar, strings or a keyboard. Where Ferrara’s take on the bass guitar showcases his technical proficiency, his identity as an artist is strictly to serve an emotional end, making his compositions comprehensible, relatable, and palatable.
