Smith Mountain Lake Cleanup Day Happening May 4

Smith Mountain Lake is called the “Lake Tahoe of the East” because of its beauty–help keep it that way this Saturday!smith mountain lake

Take Pride in Smith Mountain Lake (TPISML) is happening on Saturday, May 4, and they’re looking for volunteers to clean up the shore and lake!

“This is one of SML’s most critical initiatives each year because, as a community, volunteers, sponsors, and in-kind donors make the lake safer and more beautiful to welcome the upcoming season,” Kristina Sage, executive director of the Tri-County Lake Administrative Commission (TLAC), said.

Organizers want to make the cleanup and disposal process as simple as possible. There will be five dumpster sites from as far up as Hardy Ford Bridge down to the 4-H Center to make cleanup and disposal of debris easy. Here are the dumpster sites:

  • Magnum Point Marina
  • Bay Rock Marina
  • Walnut Run
  • Gills Creek Marina
  • Skelton 4-H Educational Conference Center

If you’re not able to participate this weekend, TPISML said that groups and individuals may plan their own cleanup event any time in May and be eligible for the free gloves, trash bags and commemorative shirts (while supplies last).

In addition, businesses and larger groups that organize their own on-the-water cleanup event may apply for reimbursement of up to $400 for costs incurred for dumpster and landfill fees.
