Whether it’s cross county skiing, ice skating, or snowboarding, a winter adventure is not far away from the Roanoke Region.

When the conditions are just right, you can find excellent cross country skiing opportunities hidden throughout the region. When it snows, the Blue Ridge Parkway will be closed to vehicles but open to skiers. Another hidden gem is Mountain Lake. It sits just above 4,000 feet of elevation and tends to attract and hold snow longer than any other area.

The Berglund Center has indoor ice skating sessions during the winter months. The schedule varies and it is best to check out their calendar for available ice skating days and times.

Snow skiing is popular activity for residents of the Roanoke Region as well. There are plenty of ski resorts and mountains all within a short drive.

Beech Mountain
Beech Mountain includes 15 ski slopes and is 193 miles from Roanoke in Beech Mountain, North Carolina.
Bryce Resort
Bryce Resort is an eight-slope facility in Bayse, about 144 miles from Roanoke.
Canaan Valley
Canaan Valley, which has 39 ski runs, is 200 miles from Roanoke in Davis, West Virginia. Canaan Valley is the highest mountain valley east of the Rocky Mountains, with a base elevation of 3,100 feet.
Hawksnest Ski Resort

Snowshoe Ski Resort
With 60 slopes, Snowshoe is the premier destination for Mid-Atlantic and Southeast skiers, snowboarders and winter enthusiasts.The resort is 140 miles from Roanoke in Snowshoe, West Virginia.
Sugar Mountain Resort
Sugar Mountain Resort features 125 acres of ski terrain. The resort is 202 miles from Roanoke in Sugar Mountain, North Carolina.
Timberline Ski Resort
Timberline Ski Resort has plenty of skiing for the whole family. The 37-slope resort is 205 miles from Roanoke in Davis, West Virginia.
White Grass
White Grass is a cross country skiing and snowshoeing resort about 200 miles from Roanoke in Davis, West Virginia. It includes 50 kilometers of trails.
Wintergreen Ski Resort
